The term Avant-Garde is often used to describe things that are experimental and novel in the art, cultural and political worlds. Jellyfish Music’s latest signing ‘The New Avant Garde’ (TNAG) are trying to do just that…push the boundaries of the musical world with their unique take on electro-pop. The Melbourne four piece are showcasing six of their tracks on the EP all co-written and produced by themselves.
All the tracks on the EP are on fire as the TNAG come out racing with up-tempo tracks, heavy beats and sweet melodies…this means you need to listen to this album loud.
The EP starts off with their first single ‘Social Slut’ which provides you with a glimpse of what TNAG is about. Great commercial electro-pop with some soulful and seductive vocals provided by lead singer Angelina.
The EP truly comes alight on the next track the very sexy ‘Addiction’ which is a bit more pop than the other tracks but show cases the brilliant vocal relationship between Angelina and other singer Sebastian. Simply it’s a good, clean track. This good work is continued on the latter track ‘Losing It’ one of the more prominent tracks on the EP. It sounds like a track JT could’ve used on his Future Sex Love Sounds album and the TNAG should put it forward as a strong candidate for their next single.
‘Can’t Take The Pressure’ and ‘Painful Pleasure’ are welcome distractions however at times they blend in too much with the rest of the tracks and unfortunately they don’t live up to the quality of the other singles on the EP.
TNAG round up their work with the more intricate work of ‘Running’ which is a good steady track with a catchy loop reminiscent of those 80’s electro tracks that you secretly love to groove to. Again it features interesting vocal work between the singers, powerful and driven drumming by Bec and great mixing from Matt.
As I said, this EP is solid. It is something worth looking at and is available through iTunes. The only downfall to this EP is that I know how talented the guys are as song writers, I understand where they are coming from BUT I would’ve liked a bit more diversity in their style. I Look forward to the album and make sure you check it out and support this up coming talent.
Thanks to TNAG and clubsguide.com.au for the EP. Check out reviews at clubsguide.com.au
