On the 19th of April this year, the world’s number one Dj composed a mind-blowing event to herald his newly crowned status (voted number 1 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Dj Poll 2008), and his new album Imagine. Armin van Buuren has worked his way to the top since 1995, and since then he’s provided some of the most memorable mixes and music in front of thousands of people around the globe. Armin’s third edition of Armin Only launched at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, Holland, and 16 000 fans united under one roof to celebrate his success. The 9 hour spectacular was recorded to produce the DVD Armin Only - Imagine, and the result is a stunning insight into the production and performances from the night.

It’s so clearly evident that Armin lived and breathed this event with his tight-knit crew, because there was intricate detail and planning for every performance. The stage featured magical lights that surrounded a tall, fabric cylinder, and Armin’s silhouette is projected onto the exterior. From the strike of the first beat, the camera swayed over thousands of people as his two introductory tracks warmed them up. The gorgeous Jennifer Rene smoothly sung her track “Fine Without You”, which quickly encapsulated the audience’s attention. After this, the music stops and Armin’s narrator asks us to go on a sensory exploration of our imaginations, and an audio-visual montage erupts onstage. A blend of Armin’s most renowned tracks, such as Serenity, Sail, Communication and Shivers, are sewn together in an epic, moving megamix; Eller van Buuren appears from the darkness onstage, strumming his electric guitar with the chords in the song, and finally we reach the climax as fireworks explode, the fabric falls down and the bassline in “Imagine” begins.

Herein, we’re given snippets from the 9 hour set which are primarily his productions from the album, highlighting some stunning live performances. Make sure you check out Susana’s powerful “If You Should Go”, as well as Jacqueline Govaert’s “Never Say Never” and Dj Shah & Chris Jones’s “Going Wrong”. The DVD is very well produced and provides exciting coverage from a massive feat by Armin. The second disc is full of special features such as a fascinating documentary on all the behind the scenes work. If you love Mr van Buuren, then this is definitely a must-have for your collection.
